Have you ever wondered how much a great painting is worth? The prices of art works are very different and depend on different factors like for example who painted them, how much the buyers want to have them and also how much they are willing to pay for them. Here I will present five most expensive paintings ever sold.


1. "Salvator Mundi" by LEONARDO DA VINCI



The number one most expensive painting was sold for $450.3 million at Christie's in New York on 15th November 2017. The seller was Dmitry Rybolovlev, however the buyer was unknown. For a long time, it was believed that Da Vinci’s painting ‘Salvator Mundi’ was destroyed until it was rediscovered in 2005.






2."Interchange" by WILLEM DE KOONING

This painting was sold for $300 million at private sale in September 2015. The seller was David Geffen and the buyer was Kenneth C. Griffin."Interchange" has been the most expensive contemporary painting ever.

3."The Card Players" by PAUL CÉZANNE

The third most expensive painting was sold for $250 million at private sale in 2011 to Royal Family of Qatar by George Embiricos. This is the last version of the famous composition by Paul Cézanne that is still in private hands. The fabulous psychological intensity in the faces of the players make this painting a masterpiece of post-impressionist art.

4. “The Scream” by Edvard Munch


Munch’s most famous piece of art, “The Scream” was sold for a record price of $119.9 million in 2012. It is currently exhibited at the British Museum, with many other of Munch’s works and first drawings on paper.

5. “Untitled” by Jean-Michel Basquiat



This painting was bought by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa for $110.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York, on 18th May 2017. The work will soon go on view in the show “One Basquiat” at the Brooklyn Museum.
