There are quite a few tips how to make learning a language more effective and appealing. As we all are a little bit different, each person might like a different method of studying or a combination of various aids to help them becoming better and encourage them to learn more and faster.
Some people would prefer reading books in their original versions and checking every word, others might choose singing songs and catching new vocabulary from the lyrics and the rest part would rather use regular language courses. Sometimes people use modern technology and media talking to other people all over the world. All of those methods are fine and may work.
I have been learning English since I was six years old and I have already tried a lot of methods of learning. I'll compare some methods and present what I like and dislike about them.
When I was younger I took a regular English course and also had individual home lessons with the teacher. This method of learning allows you to take up a lot of words and grammar during the lessons. Today a good way to learn a new language is to have an internet course. In courses like that, we can learn the language from basics to everything that you want to practice. If the teacher demands a lot of effort and gives a lot of homework these methods should be effective.
But even the best course or a teacher – at school or at home -will not be enough. A student that wants to be good at foreign language should learn a lot during their private time. The first method that I'm using is making vocabulary flashcards. I use an online website: fiszkoteka.pl. I find this very helpful as the application may also be used on the cell phone or tablet. Making flashcards causes that the words you learn stay with you for longer time until finally you are very familiar with them and know them for good. What is more it's very easy to prepare such flashcards. If a person does not want to use an application, they may make flashcards traditionally – on paper sheets. Younger children may draw paintings to words. Association is a very effective method to learn words or even grammar. They stay in our mind even longer. I think that this is a good way to practice words but not to learn to use the language.
Nowadays due to coronavirus time, I am trying a brand new method of learning – I have online lessons with a native speaker from Australia living currently in South Africa. We have online meeting three times a week and talk about various topics. I also have to do homework after every lesson which we check during the next meeting. Having lessons with native speaker online or in reality is a great way to learn. It helped me to overcome being shy about using my speaking skills. I think that this is the best way to learn English at home. It improves pronunciation, grammar knowledge, vocabulary and many different sides of your language abilities.
I recommend to try as many methods of learning languages as you possibly can as you never know which way would be the best for you. Try each of these I described and see which is your favorite one.
