During the summer everyone wants to lay on the beach, swim in the swimming pool or hang out with friends. But some people prefer to spend their time actively, e.g. visiting monuments or travelling. I prefer sightseeing, especially Italy. There are many amazing cities there, that I will tell you about in a moment.
Siena – it is located in Midwest Italy, in Tuscany. It’s a very beautiful and big town with lots of monuments. You could spend a whole day exploring this city, and you won't be able to see every corner of it anyway! Its most famous and recognizable places are, among others, Piazza del Campo (the main square), the Town Hall and numerous museums (Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo, Museo Civico).
San Gimignano – it’s a small town located near Siena, also in Tuscany. It has fewer monuments than Siena or Florence. In my opinion, it is one of the best cities to visit in Italy (especially for people who don’t like sightseeing too much!). Its most recognizable places are Sant'Agostino church and Piazza del Duomo (the main square).
Florence - it is a quite large city in central Italy and the capital of Tuscany. The city is situated on the Arno River, near the Apennines mountains. It has a huge number of monuments, including Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, San Giovanni Baptistery, Church of Santa Croce. It is very hot there during summer, as it is in all Italian cities.
Rome - it is the capital of Italy, one of the largest cities there. This city is the center of the most popular Italian monuments, such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Capitol, Navona square, Vatican, Roman Forum, Basilica of Saint Mary Major and Spanish Steps. Millions of people visit this city every year, so maybe next year you will be among them yourself!
Assisi – it’s a city in the Umbria region of central Italy. Its most popular monuments are the Basilica of St. Clare and St. Francis. Thousands of people visit this city every year and it’s one of the largest cities in Umbria. They have great restaurants and cafes there, in which you could stop and drink cold drinks during a day of sightseeing.
Venice – this city is located in the north of Italy. Its location is quite unusual - it is part of the islands in the Adriatic Sea. Most of the houses there aren’t built on land, but on water. Cool, isn't it? It also has many attractions, such as the Venetian Lagoon, St. Mark's Square in Venice, Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge.
I love all these cities, although my favorite is San Gimignano. I recommend everyone to visit these cities and try the local ice cream (they’re delicious!).
