Should smoking be illegal?

by Klara

Cigarettes are thin cylinders of finely cut tobacco rolled in paper for smoking, which have accompanied humanity for thousands of years. People used them in rituals, sacrifices to gods, in medicine, they were also important in building social ties. Cigarettes are still very popular today, but nowadays smoking is negatively perceived by society. What is a reason for this?

Currently, cigarettes are made up about 600 ingredients (including rat poison, solvents, radioactive elements and others), moreover after burn them, they create more than 7 000 chemicals (at least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer). Smokers harm not only themselves, but also the people around them. Inhaling seckond-hand smoke has the same or worse effect than smoking. Cigarettes kill about 6 million people every year.

Cigarettes don’t just hurt people, they are also damage environment, what show these examples: cigarette smoke pollute the air 10 times more than car exhaust;

one butt is one cubic metre unfit water; many companies experiment on animals, they poison them over 3 months and then kill to research.

Smoking waste money and time. The averege American spends more than 60 000$ a year on cigarettes. In addition to smoke one cigarette, people need 5 minutes, so by smoking 20 a day, they lose 100 minutes!

Cigarettess are really harmful. According to World Health Organization they are drugs, because they also bad impact on a body and make people addicted! So I wonder why they are still legal..
